Fun for the whole family at the Parc Asterix
The Parc Asterix, a good hour or so drive north of Paris, was France's homegrown answer to the flop import known as Euro Disneyland. I've never read the Asterix & Obelisk comics, but I highly enjoyed this park.
For 33 euros (for adults; I don't know how much the kids' admission costs), you get access to a cute, colorful, family-oriented amusement park. The kids enjoy seeing the settings and characters of their BDs. The teeny boppers enjoy checking each other out. The adults rediscover their childhood. And as long as you're over 1m40 (~4'7"), you can enjoy some kick-ass roller coasters!
The absolute best wooden roller coaster I've ever been on - and the best roller coaster of the whole park in my opinion - was Tonnerre de Zeus (Thunder of Zeus). It's rickety, it's wooden, and it really throws you around quite sharply!
There's also a big, twisty, more traditionally American-style roller coaster. I forget what it's called, but you just roll with it as you go. The bobsled-style roller coaster kicks butt, too. To cool off quickly, try the water ride called the Menhir Express.
The one disappointment was the Transdemonium, a rip-off of Disney's Haunted Mansion. Sure, theatrically the decor is nicely done. But once you've been thrown around on the Tonnerre de Zeus, the Transdemonium kinda sucks, quite frankly.
I highly recommend the Parc Asterix if you're in the area. Everything is so nicely constructed and colorful. The music isn't as mind-numbingly annoying and tenuous. The surrounding forests are lush and beautiful when viewed from the top of any of their kick-ass roller coasters, or "grand huit" as they are called in French.
