A very large resort with excellent services and great terrain
Megeve was developed by the Rothschild's after they grew disenchanted with St. Moritz. It is a bit fancy as a ski resort with the in-town shops catering more to the high end. Prices are a little out of control during the French holiday season in the second half of February, but otherwise reasonable accommodation can be found, and lift tickets and rental prices are far cheaper than the US (about half, even with the Euro exchange).
There are really at least three mountains that are accessible from a single ticket, each of them at least the size of Heavenly. The terrain tends toward moderate with even Black trails fairly easy, but in Europe you don't get your pass taken for skiing off piste, so you can make your own trail through terrain as challenging as you can manage.
The lifts are mostly fast, though there are some insanely long Poma (drag) lifts that pull you through expert hills (>50%), a bit of an ass test. There are lots of gondola lifts, some very fast, and all a good opportunity to warm up. If the weather is the least bit inclement there are no lines, nor are there any out of the peak season.
