The Best Pizzeria EVER
The best pizzas I have ever had come from Au Vieux Four (means "by the old oven") in Nice. They always use fresh ingredients on a paper-thin crust that becomes nice and crisp when baked in a wood fire (au feu de bois). The prices are very reasonable in a city whose restaurant prices have been steadily climbing ever since the changeover to the euro in 2002.
I ordered a Provencal pizza (eggplant, red pepper, cheese, tomato sauce) for 8.80. Their excellent Scampi pizza goes for 11.00 and has the normal tomato sauce and cheese topped with persillade (parsley-garlic-butter sauce) and whole shrimp. The waiter also told us about their new (seasonal, perhaps) Pizza Noix St-Jacques (scallops!), which sounded like the Scampi with the shrimp replaced by scallops. It sounded great, but perhaps I'll have it some other time.
These pizzas are light yet satisfying. It is a refreshing change from those heavy, greasy, American pizzas. Plus, you always have room for dessert, which is always excellent Au Vieux Four. They make some good tiramisu.
They make my favorite pizza. I talk about these pizzas whenever I'm not in Nice. I even struck up a friendly conversation with the owner, who has family in the Bay Area!
Seriously. Best pizzas EVER.
